Moving Toward 2010

With the eyes of the world on Vancouver, property values are soaring. Housing prices are on the rise while average and median household incomes are decreasing.

People on the other side of the income gap face dire straits without community awareness and support. The availability of housing to low wage earners, young families, seniors and others with limited incomes, including people with disabilities, singles of all ages, students and new arrivals, is a critical factor in the social and economic viability of the Lower Mainland.

The Network is particularly concerned about the rising cost of housing and the potential impact on tenants and residents of Greater Vancouver from further housing pressures. Possible impacts leading up to the 2010 Olympics and other world class events include conversions of low-cost housing to tourist or media housing, increased gentrification and rental rates leading to evictions of lower income populations. We feel it is imperative that there be initiatives in place to assure a long-term outcome of a sustainable supply of affordable housing.

Network Participants are keen to use their collective experience, contacts and skill to highlight models and strategies for affordable housing and ongoing community, social and economic development.
